Mechanical control of volunteer potatoes to ensure field hygiene
Project
Project code: EIP-Agri-Bay-2023-LGMTH
Contract period: 01.01.2023
- 31.12.2025
Budget: 64,337 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: farming equipment
Volunteer potatoes (VPs) are potato plants that appear in a crop rotation several years after the main potato cultivation in the following crops. The main source of these undesirable companion plants is tuber losses during harvest, which are not destroyed by mild winters. VPs pose a major challenge in subsequent crops in all regions of Germany. Unfortunately, current control methods (especially non-chemical ones) are insufficient. However, consistent control of VPs across all crops in a crop rotation is necessary to ensure regular cultivation of potatoes at intervals that are phytosanitary and economically reasonable. The aim of the project is to create a concept for the further development of the sorrel robot to combat VPs. The targeted destruction of the mother tubers can sustainably interrupt the development cycle of the VPs on the field and ensure suitable field hygiene.
