Reg-Insekt-Öko: Regional production of sustainable chicken feed with the help of insect larvae and its application in organic farming
Project
Project code: EIP-Agri-Bay-2023-LPTTH
Contract period: 01.01.2023
- 31.12.2025
Budget: 133,016 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: farming practice/activity, animal husbandry
Soybean meal and fish meal are important protein components of animal feed, but the EU is highly dependent on imports of these meals. Farminsect has developed an automated platform that uses black soldier flies (BSF) to produce high-quality protein feeds from agricultural residues. With help of previous EIP-Agri funding, Farminsect developed and tested a regional insect fattening facility for aquaculture. Since September 2021, insect larvae have also been approved as feed for chicken. In this project, a concept will be developed on how to adapt the insect fattening System for aquaculture to the needs of a laying hens farm. An implementation plan will be developed, that lays out how local insect breeding can be integrated in an existing laying hens farm operation. A feeding trial will be designed to evaluate the effect of feeding of black soldier fly larvae (live, dried and as mixed feed pellets) instead of soy to laying hens.
