Nutrition Intervention Forecasting and Monitoring (NIFAM)
Project
Project code: 2820FENV09
Contract period: 05.07.2022
- 30.10.2025
Budget: 1,106,298 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Understanding the food environment can provide insights into the complex problem of malnutrition. The transdisciplinary action research and development project NIFAM aims to co-develop a scientific decision support framework with researchers in Vietnam, Myanmar, and Germany. The framework should be applicable to complex situations when resources are limited and the costs, benefits, and risks of various possible nutrition interventions are uncertain. The NIFAM project aims to support the decision making process of policy makers in Vietnam (and Myanmar) by forecasting, implementing and monitoring effective nutrition interventions in a transdisciplinary research approach. Both countries have highly dynamic food environments and face food security and food safety issues. NIFAM aims to identify and implement cost-effective interventions to sustainably improve nutrition and reduce various forms of malnutrition (contribution to SDG 2). Various potential nutrition interventions will be jointly identified, modeled, and monitored. In particular, digital communication options will be investigated with regard to their effectiveness in terms of enabling better food choices and effective knowledge transfer via short films (TV, YouTube). Likewise, the effects of nutritional labeling of products, restricting marketing to children, and an e-learning platform or cell phone app on healthy eating will be investigated in terms of their effectiveness.
