Climate change

Project code: 2812ERA012
Contract period: 15.02.2013 - 14.02.2016
Budget: 119,962 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research

SMACC will provide field‐to‐market strategies for production intensification of selected key crops that are regionally adapted to help sub‐Saharan regions cope with climate change. The cooperation of two agricultural research institutes (ARARI, Ethiopia; KARI, Kenya), two African universities (Bahir Dar, Egerton) and two European universities (Wien, Hohenheim) will establish a mutual research perspective on CC and smallholders’ livelihoods in order to optimize CC relevant practices along the innovation value chain. Field trials of production system intensification will provide strategies to cope with unpredictable climatic conditions and develop water management techniques. In interviews, technical household practices will be analyzed and innovations concerning post‐harvest processes and energy‐related issues will be assessed regarding their feasibility. Information gained in the interviews concerning social, health, economic and food related aspects will help to ensure that technical innovations are imbedded in a supportive environment. Analysis of product performance at local/regional levels will help to develop, review and adapt an innovation plan. The research process will be evaluated based on questionnaires and a workshop. The implementation process of the research outcome will be assessed. Recommen-dations for practice, research, administration and policies will be identified with all partners. To secure continuous efficient knowledge distribution and to initiate mutual learning, a local/regional network will be created. This learning community will not only accompany the research process but will build capacities and enable knowledge transfer via manuals and the establishment and maintenance of a knowledge data base.
